COLUMBIA, SC - The Fightin' Christians held off a late Gamecock rally to beat fifth-ranked South Carolina 7-5, Wednesday night at Sarge Frye Field.
Tim Schilling (4-0) pitched 6.2 innings to collect the victory, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out eight. Elon used a four-run sixth inning to pave the way for a 7-5 victory.
The Fightin' Christians broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Shaun Kopczynski scored on a wild pitch.
Jason Tuttle led off the four-run sixth with a triple. Brian Ingram walked, than Kopczynski was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Whit Bryant grounded out to shortstop as Tuttle scored to give Elon a 2-0 lead. Ingram scored on a wild pitch and Kopczynski scored after an RBI single by Jim Swenson as the Fightin' Christians extended their lead to 4-0. After Brian Kane clubbed an RBI single, Swenson crossed the plate to push the lead to 5-0.
The Gamecocks scored three in the bottom of the seventh to cut the 5-0 deficit to 5-3. Elon responded by posting runs in the eighth and ninth. South Carolina scored two in the bottom of the ninth, but that was all they could muster as the Fightin' Christians shocked the Gamecocks 7-5, to improve to 23-9. South Carolina falls to 25-4.
