ELON COLLEGE, NC -- Jim Swenson finished 4-for-6 with two runs scored and five RBI as Elon swept a pair of contests, 16-1 and 6-4, from defending Big South Conference Champion Winthrop at Newsome Field on Saturday afternoon.
Swenson swatted a pair of doubles in the opener as the Fightin' Christians (32-23, 10-10 Big South) outhit the Eagles 16-2 and capitalized on seven Winthrop (25-27, 5-10) errors. Elon scored in each of the first six innings en route to the lopsided victory.
In the nightcap, the Fightin' Christians overcame a 4-2 deficit with a four-run outburst in the sixth inning. Elon edged the Eagles 7-5 in the hitting department for the second contest.
Brad Pinkerton (6-5) hurled seven innings of two-hit baseball for the victory in game one. Pinkerton allowed one run while walking six and fanning six.
Turning in his finest performance since knocking off top-ranked South Carolina on the road earlier this season, Tim Schilling (5-3) hurled five innings of one-hit ball in relief for the win in game two. Schilling allowed no runs and no walks while striking out six.
Whit Bryant (4-for-7, 2B, three runs scored, 4 RBI), Brian Ingram (3-for-5, five runs scored, RBI), Shaun Kopczynski (3-for-5, four runs scored, RBI) and Wes Smith (3-for-7, two 2B, SB, SH, run scored, 2 RBI) all menaced the Eagles' pitching staff all day long.
The two teams will meet one final time with a 1 p.m. contest at Newsome Field on Sunday as Elon will conclude its regular season and celebrate Senior Day.
