CHARLESTON, SC -- Shaun Kopczynski's RBI double plated Jason Tuttle and Whit Bryant with the go-ahead runs in the top of the eighth inning to lift Elon (21-16, 6-4) to a 11-10 victory over the Buccaneers of Charleston Southern (10-23, 2-9) on Friday.
The Phoenix, who trailed 10-7 entering the eighth, scored four runs off CSU pitchers to grab the lead for good. The teams combined for 20 hits and six errors. The Phoenix grabbed an early lead, scoring twice in the opening frame, but the Bucs rallied for four runs of thier own in the bottom of the inning. Elon would tie the contest in the second with two more runs.
The Phoenix managed to take the lead again in the fourth when they scored one run only to see the Bucs plate two in the bottom of the inning. Elon would score one run in each of the next two innings, but CSU scored two in each of those frames to hold the 10-7 lead entering the eighth.
Adam Acosta (3-3) picked up the victory for Elon, throwing one inning in relief of starter Whit Bryant. Acosta allowed two earned runs and struck out two. Bryant went 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing six earned runs on nine hits while striking out three CSU hitters. Matt Garner threw 1/3 of an inning to pick up his third save of the year.
Tuttle (3-for-6, 3 runs scored, RBI, 2 SB), Brian Ingram (3-for-6, 2B, run scored, 2 RBI) and Robbie Smith (2-for-4, 2 2B, 2 runs scored, RBI) all had multi-hit games.
Patrick Boucher (2-3) took the loss for the Bucs, allowing two earned runs in two innings of work. Boucher gave up three hits and walked two in relief of starter Matt Coenen. Coenen gave up eight earned runs on eight hits and four walks.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
