ELON, NC--Elon's Laura Griffin smacked 14 kills and Kate Hart added 36 assists for the Phoenix's win over East Carolina in three games (30-25, 30-27, 30-21) on Friday at Alumni Gym.
The Pirates (5-18, 0-6 C-USA) came out strong in game one as they took the early lead at 6-5. After the kill by Elon's Maria LaBrutto to even the score at six, the Pirates never reclaimed the lead in the first game. Elon scored the next three points, two of which were kills by LaBrutto, who ended the night with 11 kills and three digs.
In the second game, Elon (7-19, 2-6 Big South) looked like it was going to make quick work of East Carolina as the Phoenix jumped out to a 17-9 lead. However, East Carolina fought back to even the score at 26. On a kill by Maria LaBrutto the Phoenix took the next point, before the Pirates evened the score at 27. East Carolina would not score again in the second game, and Elon came away with a win in the second game.
In the third and final game East Carolina won the first point, before a kill by Kate Hart evened the score. The Pirates would never lead again in the third game. Elon went on to score the next six points, before completing the sweep.
Elon's Laura Griffin led the Phoenix in kills with 14 and Emily Hayes added 13 kills and eight digs. Mary Kate Spear notched 10 digs and Kate Hart contributed 36 assists to the victory.
The Pirate's Alexis Jones led in kills with 12 and Sarah Vick added nine digs. Jessica Vick accumulated 16 assists and four digs.
Elon travels to Virginia Tuesday to take on Big South foe Radford at 6 p.m. The Phoenix return home on November 1 for another conference matchup with UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
