SUNSET BEACH, NC -- Becky Poindexter carded a six-over-par 78 as Elon began the 2002 PUPS Big South Conference Championship in fifth place Sunday at Sea Trail Resort.

Poindexter (18th/35, 40-38--78) led all Phoenix golfers, followed by teammates Sammy Sue Wilson (19th, 40-39--79), Laura Orlen (Tied 20th, 44-36--80), Katie Knoepffler (Tied 25th, 43-40--83) and Alison Mangini (Tied 28th, 43-42--85).

The Phoenix (320) trails UNC Wilmington (296), Coastal Carolina (298), Charleston Southern (302) and Winthrop (311) in the three-round, three-day tournament. Elon leads Radford (325) and Birmingham-Southern (327) on the 6,031-yard course.

Orlen was named to the Academic All-Big South Team. She has forged a 3.44 cumulative GPA in business administration during her career at Elon, including an appearance on the Dean's List and seven showings on the AD's Honor Roll.
