LYNCHBURG, VA -- The Liberty baseball team swept a Big South doubleheader from the Elon Phoenix at Worthington Stadium on Saturday.
The Flames won the first game by a score of 10-9 in 12 innings and the second, a seven-inning contest, 6-2. The wins break a nine-game losing streak for the Flames.
In game one, Liberty (15-14-1, 3-6 BSC) fell behind 5-0 early, but came back with a run each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to make the score 6-3. The Flames took the lead for the first time when they scored four runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-6 lead.
Larry Wayne York scored the first run of the seventh on an Elon error. Steve Baker then singled to drive in Joey Monahan to make the score 6-5. Shane Miller drove in Kelly Knouse to tie the game at 6-6. The go-ahead run was scored when Matt Hagen singled to score Baker to give the Flames a one-run advantage.
Elon (21-8, 4-2 BSC) retook the lead with three runs in the top of the ninth. Wes Smith, Ricky Callison and Ross Cook scored the runs to put the Phoenix back on top. Liberty came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to send the game to extra innings. York drove in both Flame runs in the ninth with a double down the right field line scoring Keith Butler and Israel Noble. Liberty scored the winning runs in the bottom of the 12th when Baker reached on an error, scoring York to give the Flames the 10-9 win.
Monahan was 3-for-6 and Miller was 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Flames in the first game. Jason Jones, who was the winning pitcher in both games, pitched the final inning, giving up just one hit for the Flames.
Cook was 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Phoenix at the plate. Brian Ingram's 0-for-2 outing in the nightcap ended his 16-game hitting streak. Matt Garner pitched the final three innings, surrendering three runs on three hits to take the loss for Elon.
Jason Tuttle’s two game-one stolen bases gave him outright possession of Elon’s all-time lead in that category. At present, Tuttle leads Maurice Morton (1982-85 seasons) 112-110 in career stolen bases.
In game two, after Elon took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the fourth, Liberty came back with five runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. York and Monahan each drove in two runs in the inning. Liberty added another run in the sixth to make the final score 6-2. Marcus Maringola was 3-for-3 with a home run and an RBI to lead the Flames at the plate. Jones pitched the complete game, giving up two runs on four hits to run his record to 7-1 on the year.
Cook was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Phoenix. Justin Weeks took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits for Elon.
