TUCSON, AZ – Elon University rookie second baseman Gary Morris (Franklin, NC/Franklin) was listed as an honorable mention selection when
Collegiate Baseball released the 2002 Louisville Slugger’s Freshman All-American team on Wednesday afternoon.
The 5-9, 175-pound Morris played in all 57 of Elon’s games, starting 56 of them, while helping the 34-23 Phoenix to a Big South Conference regular season runner-up finish and a berth in the Clemson Regional. He batted .271 (54-for-199) with 45 runs scored, five doubles, two home runs, 28 RBI, 25 walks, five sacrifice hits and nine stolen bases. He also turned in a .953 fielding average.
Morris received the Chester Huey Scholarship (Freshman of the Year Award) at Elon’s annual athletics awards banquet last month. He was the lone Phoenix tabbed to the All-Regional team last week at Clemson.
