CLEVELAND, OH -- The Elon volleyball team improved to 1-2 in the Medical Mutual CSU Invitational hosted by Cleveland State with a 3-1 victory over St. Francis on Saturday morning.
The Phoenix, led by Laura Griffin's 17 kills and 12 digs, dropped the first game 17-30, but swept the next three 31-29, 30-28 and 30-24 respectively.
Emily Hayes added 12 kills in the victory and both Kate Hart (26) and Katie Newby (20) both garnered 20 assist performances for the Phoenix. Katie Forman and Mary Kate Spear each added 13 digs, while Newby dug 12 balls.
St. Francis was led by Emily Turza's 14 kills and 12 digs. St. Francis recorded 10 blocks to Elon's six and served up 10 aces to Elon's six, but it was not enough to overcome the Phoenix attack.
The win improves Elon to 3-7 on the year, while St. Franics dropped to 5-6.
Elon will finish up tournament play when they face host Cleveland State at 2:30 on Saturday afternoon.
