TOWSON, MD – Jason Galloway caught eight passes for a career-high 174 yards and scored two touchdowns as Towson claimed its fourth consecutive home win with a 24-7 non-conference victory over Elon at Minnegan Field at Johnny Unitas® Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (4-4), who are now 4-0 at home and 0-4 on the road, forced five turnovers and shut out Elon (2-7) until the Phoenix scored on a one-yard touchdown run by Marcus Johnson with 18 seconds remaining in the game.
The Tigers took the opening kickoff and drove to the Elon 15-yard line where Stephan Toth kicked a 32-yard field goal to give Towson a 3-0 first-quarter lead. Galloway caught a 47-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Melzi with 11:51 left in the first half for a 10-0 Towson lead. With 2:50 remaining in the half, P.D. Moore intercepted a pass and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 17-0 halftime lead.
Late in the third quarter, a 29-yard touchdown pass from Melzi to Galloway on a fourth down play stretched the Tiger lead to 24-0 with 1:48 remaining. Galloway had set up the touchdown with a 21-yard punt return to the Elon 35-yard line.
Melzi led the Tiger offense by completing 15 of 26 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns. He did not throw an interception. On the other side of the ball, Regan Neal made a game-high 13 tackles, snagged one of the Tigers’ four interceptions and broke up two passes.
Johnson led the Phoenix offense by rushing for 57 yards on 13 carries while scoring Elon’s only touchdown of the game. The Phoenix rushed for 148 yards, but picked up only 88 passing yards. The two Elon quarterbacks, Anthony Crews and C.W. Singletary, combined to complete just six of 23 passes for 88 yards with four interceptions.
Phoenix linebacker Eddie Bell amassed a team-high 10 tackles, including five solo stops. He also collected a game-high and career-high four tackles for negative yardage (minus 17 yards), including a sack (minus 10 yards).
