Hensen Stymies Spartans in Phoenix Victory

BURLINGTON, NC – Brian Hensen struck out nine batters, leading Elon to a 6-2 victory over UNC Greensboro Tuesday night at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

Henson (3-2) scattered eight hits over eight innings and allowed just one walk and one earned run. In the ninth inning, Phoenix reliever Lance Cole struck out the only batter that he faced to log his third save of the season.

Spartan starter Ryan Falcon (1-2) surrendered three earned runs on five hits in four and 1/3 innings. He issued no free passes and fanned seven Phoenix batters.

In the first inning, Ingram gave Elon (22-13-1) an early 2-0 advantage on a two-run homer to left field. The blast sent Paul Bennett home from first base. Bennett had reached base on a single to right.

The Spartans (25-10) earned one run back right away in the second. Jay Maule led off the frame with a triple to right center and scored on Kirk Strebin’s double down the left field line.

Elon stretched its lead to 3-1 in the third when Bennett flied out to center to sacrifice Evan Tartaglia home from third. The Phoenix tacked on two more runs in the fifth when Gary Morris and Drew Davis both ran home on a throwing error by Spartan shortstop David Adams.

Mike Fratoe’s solo home run to left field improved the Elon advantage to 6-1 in the seventh. UNC Greensboro scored the game’s final run in the eighth when Ryan Galligan scampered home from third on an error by Phoenix right fielder Holt Montgomery.

Elon will be back in action 7 p.m. Wednesday at North Carolina A&T. The Spartans host High Point at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
