Gustin, Swearengin and Notaro Earn Big South Honors

CHARLOTTE, NC--The Big South Conference honored three Elon softball players entering the 2003 Big South Softball Championship Thursday afternoon.

Junior first baseman Jenny Gustin (Mooresville, NC/South Iredell) earned First-Team All-Big South honors. At the time of the award she was batting a .421 in Conference play and currently holds .326 overall average. Gustin concluded the regular season with three home runs, 11 doubles and 22 RBI. She sported a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in League play and .931 overall. She also boasts a slugging percentage of .465 heading into the first round of the tournament.

Jessica Swearengin, a sophomore outfielder from Mooresville, NC, was awarded Second-Team All-Big South. Swearengin leads the Phoenix with a .328 batting average, while hitting .333 in Conference play. During the regular season, she notched one home run, 27 runs scored and was 14-20 in stolen bases.

Elon catcher Lori Notaro, a junior from Whitehouse Station, NJ, was also named Second-Team All-Big South. On the season, Notaro garnered a .296 batting average with six doubles, one triple and nine RBI. She has scored 19 runs and was a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts. Before Championship play, Notaro held a .988 fielding percentage.

The Conference also annouced its All-Academic team. Notaro, an elementary education major who sports a 3.58 overall GPA, was one of eight members on this team. This two-time Dean's List an Big South Presidential Honor Roll member leads the Phoenix with one triple. She has earned Athletic Director's Honor Roll accolades five times and is a team representative on the Student Athlete Advisory Council. Notaro also ranks second on the team in sacrifice hits with five and is third on the team in hits (42) and doubles.

The Big South is a NCAA Division I Conference with nine member institutions across the Southeast. Birmingham-Southern College, Charleston Southern University, Coastal Carolina University, Elon University, High Point University, Liberty University, Radford University, UNC Asheville and Winthrop University comprise the 19-year-old League, which is based in Charlotte, NC.
