ELON, NC – LaJean Morrow put down 16 kills and Adrian Hicks dished out 51 assists as UNC Greensboro overcame Elon 30-23, 30-27, 29-31, 30-25 in the Southern Conference opener for both teams Tuesday night at Alumni Gym.
The match witnessed 31 ties and 15 lead changes altogether during the four games. The Spartans (4-8, 1-0) used a 16-4 run to turn a 19-14 game-one deficit into a 30-23 victory. In game two, UNCG’s 18-9 surge transformed an 18-12 deficit into a 30-27 triumph.
The Phoenix (6-9, 0-1) held tough in game three – in which nine ties and five lead changes occurred – to claim a 31-29 win. In the fourth game, the Spartans went on a 19-11 run to overcome a 14-11 deficit for the deciding 30-25 victory.
Hilary Overby (12 kills), Abbi Meyer (11 kills), Kim Dayton (22 digs) and Lauren Richards (three service aces) all turned in solid performances for UNCG. Elon was keyed by Emily Hayes (18 kills, pictured right), Kate Hart (48 assists), Mary Kate Spear (season-high-tying 26 digs) and Maria LaBrutto (14 digs).
The Phoenix will host Wofford at 7 p.m. Friday at Alumni Gym and Furman at 2 p.m. Sunday at Jordan Gym. The Spartans host Furman at 2 p.m. Saturday and Wofford at 2 p.m. Sunday.
