ELON, NC – Frida Sigurdardottir pounded out 14 kills and Krysti Havens came up with 17 digs as UNC Asheville overcame Elon 31-29, 30-27, 11-30, 30-21 in 2003 Phoenix Classic action Friday afternoon at Alumni Gym.
The match marked the second of the four-team, six-match, round-robin tournament. Mercer rallied past UNC Wilmington 20-30, 30-21, 30-22, 28-30, 15-12 earlier Friday.
Talia Ogle (11 kills, 10 digs), Kelly Budnik (11 kills), Amanda Wiles (33 assists) and Elif Unlu (12 digs) all turned in solid performances for UNC Asheville (1-0). Elon (0-4) was led by Juliena Gigon (14 kills, three service aces), Emily Hayes (13 kills, four service aces, 10 digs) and Kate Hart (42 service aces, 13 digs).
The first game witnessed 13 ties and five lead changes, setting the pace for the rest of the match. The Bulldogs broke open a 5-5 deadlock in the fourth game with a 19-11 run to forge a 24-16 cushion en route to the deciding victory.
UNC Asheville will face Mercer at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by an Elon/UNC Wilmington match-up at 8 p.m. On Saturday, UNC Wilmington will meet UNC Asheville at 11 a.m. and Elon will play Mercer at 1:30 p.m.
