Elon Volleyball Downs High Point 3-2

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team defeated non-conference foe High Point on Thursday night 3-2 to break High Point’s six match winning streak. Elon took the first game 30-27 before falling 33-31. The Phoenix came back to take game three, 30-24 but dropped game four 21-30 to send it to a fifth game. Elon downed the Panthers 15-9 in the deciding game to win the match.

In game five, Elon jumped to a quick 4-1 lead before High Point closed the gap to one at 7-6. From that point, the Phoenix went on a 5-0 scoring run to lead by six at 12-6 before closing the game at 15-9.

The Phoenix took the lead in game one at 5-4 and led the rest of the game. With Elon ahead 29-22, High Point made a five point run off of Elon errors to cut the lead to two at 29-27, but Elon was able to finish the game 30-27 on an Emily Lucci kill.

In game two, down 4-3, the Panthers went on an 8-0 scoring run to take the lead at 11-4. High Point would lead by as much as 10 before Elon tied the game at 28-28. After being tied at 31, High Point took the lead off of an Elon service error and finished the game at 33-31 on a kill from Jamie Kaufman.

Ahead 24-23 in game three, Elon out score the Panthers 6-1 to finish the game 30-24 behind solid hitting and effective serving. High Point took control in game four with an early lead it sustained throughout the game. The Panthers hit .324 with only four errors to finish the game 30-21 and send the match to a fifth game.

Elon (11-8, 4-1 SoCon) recorded four players with double-digit kills. Britany Westphal led the offense with 17 kills while Emily Hayes added 13 and Lucci posted 10. Juliena Gigon notched a double-double for the Phoenix with 12 kills and 11 digs. MK Spear led the defense with 20 digs while Natalie Moore posted 57 assists.

Kaufman led the Panther’s offense with 20 kills. Lindsey Pickens added 15 and Ashley Johnson contributed 14 kills. Kim Anderson notched 21 digs to lead the defense while Michelle Feiser posted 11 digs and 49 assists.

Elon returns to action at the Nest on Saturday, October 16 in a 7:00 p.m. match with the Georgia Southern Eagles. High Point (14-10, 4-2 Big South) returns to action on Friday, October 22 in a 7:00 match at Charleston Southern.
