Furman Wins Fifth Straight With Shutout of Phoenix

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Junior Erin Sanders scored with 9:54 remaining in the match to lift Furman to a 1-0 Southern Conference victory over Elon in women’s soccer action Friday night at Stone Soccer Stadium. The win, Furman’s fifth straight, evened the Lady Paladins’ overall record at 7-7-0 and improved Furman to 5-1-0 in league play. The Phoenix fell to 1-10-1, 0-5-1.

Nicky Darling dribbled up the left side and sent a cross into the box that found the head of freshman Anna Betton. Sanders beat her defender to Betton’s header in the middle of the box and headed the game-winner past Elon goalkeeper Kara Zagol for her second goal of the season.

Elon was able to keep the match scorless for over 80 minutes despite Furman holding a commanding 18-6 edge in shot attempts. After a scoreless first half, Zagol denied Betton on a breakaway on the right side of the box just seconds after the second half restart. Furman fought off pressure from the Elon forwards through much of the second half until Sanders’ tally at 80:06.

Zagol, who recorded seven saves in net, took the loss in goal for the Phoenix. Furman’s Andie Hinshaw managed one save to record her fourth clean sheet in the last five matches.

Elon returns home to host East Tennessee State on Sunday. Furman will travel to Davidson, 5-1-0 in league play, on Sunday with the Southern Conference lead at stake.
