CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Ivory Latta scored 17 points and Erlana Larkins added 16 markers to lead No. 9/12 North Carolina to an 86-40 victory over Elon in the season-opening contest for both teams at Carmichael Auditorium on Friday night.
UNC (1-0) jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Elon's Kitara McMoore sank a free throw 2:10 into the game. The Tar Heel lead expanded to 21-1 before Tierra Bumbrey hit Elon's first field goal of the night with 12:36 to play in the first half. UNC would hold a 50-18 advantage at the break.
The Phoenix (0-1) would trim the lead to no less than 30 in the second stanza and the Tar Heels expaned the lead to the largest margin of the night, 46, with two free throws by Jessica Sell with two ticks left on the clock.
McMoore paced the Phoenix with 11 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 21 minutes of action. Sade Jordan added eight points and five boards for Elon.
Leah Metcalf tallied 10 points, three steals and seven assists for UNC.
Elon connected on 28.3 percent of its shots compared to 44.9 percent for the Tar Heels. The Phoenix was only out-rebounded by a 44-40 margin as each team grabbed 16 offensive boards. UNC forced Elon into 27 turnovers while only committing 13 themselves.
The Phoenix will travel to Miami, Fla. to participate in the Miami Herald Thanksgiving Classic where it will take on host Florida International at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and either West Virginia or Wichita State on Saturday. North Carolina will take on UConn in the Jimmy V Classic at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C.
