ELON, N.C. – Evan Tartaglia pounded out five hits and Grant Rembert smacked three doubles and drove in four runs as Elon swept a doubleheader – 7-3 and 14-2 – from Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at Latham Park. Following Saturday’s 6-5, 12-inning victory, the Phoenix concluded a three-game sweep of the Southern Conference weekend series.
In the opener, Phoenix starter Lance Cole (1-0) scattered seven hits over eight innings, allowing just a pair of bases on balls and two earned runs while fanning two batters. In the ninth inning, Elon closer Chad Tilley retired the contest’s last batter to record his first save of the season.
Nick Peterson (0-2) suffered the game one loss for the Mountaineers (0-9 overall, 0-3 Southern Conference), yielding two earned runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out four batters in six innings.
Tartaglia (3-for-5, RBI, double, triple) and Evan Erickson (2-for-4, run, 2 RBIs, SB) turned in multi-hit performances as the Phoenix (6-5, 3-0) out-hit ASU 10-8 in the opener. Doug Fowler (2-for-5, run, RBI) led the Mountaineers, who committed three errors to one Elon miscue.
In the nightcap, the Phoenix erupted for six-run outbursts in both the third and fifth frames en route to a 14-0 advantage after five innings of the seven-inning affair. Elon tallied 17 hits, 10 players left on base and one error to ASU’s seven hits, six men stranded on base and three errors.
Phoenix righthander Matt Garner (1-1) worked the first six innings and gave up just two earned runs on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Mountaineers starter Jonathan Reeder (0-3) was chased after four frames, surrendering six earned runs on 11 hits and two free passes.
Rembert (3-for-4, three runs, four RBIs, three doubles), Tyler Stevens (3-for-3, three RBIs) and Tartaglia (2-for-4, two runs, SB) keyed the Elon offense in the nightcap. ASU was paced by Justin Lee (2-for-3, RBI).
The Phoenix will be back in action Tuesday with a 4 p.m. visit to Coastal Carolina. The Mountaineers visit North Carolina at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
