Miley, Meeks Lead Elon Past Mountaineers

ELON, N.C. -- Meredith Miley's run in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted Elon over Appalachian State 1-0 in the first Southern Conference win for the Phoenix. Whitney Meeks' nine strikeouts in five innings led the Phoenix to a second win of the day, 8-0.

Elon moves to 14-4-1 on the year and 2-0 in the conference while Appalachian State falls to 6-11, 0-2.

The first game was tied at 0-0 going in to the bottom of the sixth inning. Miley put down a bunt single to lead off the inning. Paige Goss advanced Miley to second on a sacrifice bunt. Miley then got to third on a wild pitch before the catcher threw the ball over the head of the third baseman allowing Miley to cross home plate and put Elon up 1-0. In the top of the seventh inning, the Phoenix tallied three quick outs to end the game.

Jen Lamb records the win for Elon after pitching a complete game giving up four hits and no runs. She struck out four batters. Jennifer Hurley suffers the loss for Appalachian State after pitching six innings, giving up two hits and one run and striking out nine.

In the second game of the day, Elon started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Goss led off the inning and reached first base on a single up the middle before stealing second. Dani Concepcion laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Goss to third. With runners on second and third, Jen Massey singled up the middle to score Goss and Christina Melton and put Elon up 2-0.

The Phoenix broke the game open in the second inning scoring six runs on five hits. With the bases loaded, Concepcion singled in the infield, but the Mountaineers were unable to get an out at home plate and Jessica Swearengin scored from third base. With the bases still loaded, Melton singled to right field to score Miley. Jenny Gustin knocked one to right center field to score Goss and Concepcion and put Elon up 6-0. Natalie Layden singled with the bases loaded to drive in Massey and pinch runner Nicole Ellis and put Elon at the final score of 8-0.

Behind the pitching of Whitney Meeks (6-1), who gave up only one hit and struck out nine batters in the five inning game,, Elon held Appalachian for the rest of the game.

Jordan Arnold (2-2) gets the loss for the Mountaineers after pitching 1.1 innings and giving up eight runs on eight hits.

Elon and Appalachian State face off again on Wednesday in a 3:00 p.m. game at East Field.
