ELON, N.C. – Elon University head football coach Paul Hamilton announced today the addition of three assistants to his 2005 coaching staff – wide receivers coach Ron Antoine, inside linebackers coach Shane Burnham and defensive line coach Jon Shields.
Antoine comes to the Phoenix from Ohio University, where he was the wide receivers coach and academic coordinator for four years (2001-04). A Dean’s List student at Colorado State, Antoine graduated in 1997 with a bachelor’s of science degree in exercise and sport science. While playing as a wide receiver, he helped the Rams advance to the Holiday Bowl in both 1994 and 1995. While serving as a member of the Colorado State coaching staff in 1997, Antoine helped the Rams return to the Holiday Bowl again. He earned a master’s of education degree in educational administration in 1999 from Ohio.
Burnham joins the Hamilton staff after serving The Citadel as a linebackers coach last season. Previously, he was a linebackers coach at the University of Richmond for four years (1998, 2001-03). While there, Burnham coached All-Atlantic 10 Conference selections Adrian Archie and Mark Thompson. He also helped the Spiders to claim a conference title and an NCAA-IAA playoff berth during his tenure.
A 1998 University of South Carolina graduate, Burnham earned a bachelor’s of science degree in exercise science while collecting four varsity letters for the Gamecocks’ football team. The two-year starter was named his team’s most outstanding inside linebacker as both a junior and a senior. During his senior campaign, he served his squad as a captain and was honored to the American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team. Also as a senior, the three-time Academic All-SEC choice received his team’s leadership award and was named the Honda/Jefferson-Pilot Scholar Athlete of the Week for his performance in games against both the University of Kentucky and Auburn University.
Shields comes to Elon from Hampden-Sydney College, where he spent the past year as the Tigers’ assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. While at Hampden-Sydney, he coached five All-ODAC defensive players. The Tigers led the league in pass defense and ranked third in total defense. Shields has also worked four seasons (2000-03) as an assistant coach at Illinois State University, spending time with the outside linebackers, safeties and wide receivers during his stint there. Before that, he worked with the defensive backs as a graduate assistant at Duke University for the 1999 season after coaching the defensive line as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech for the 1998 campaign.
A 1995 Virginia Tech graduate, Shields received a bachelor’s of science degree in sports management.
