Borgaard Leads Elon to Sweep of Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C.– Megan Borgaard recorded back-to-back game winning RBIs to lift Elon to a sweep of instate foe Charlotte on Wednesday afternoon at Phillips Sports Complex. The Phoenix took a 9-4 victory in game one and a 1-0 win in the second game of the day.

Elon used a four run sixth inning to break open a 4-4 tie in the first game. Dani Concepcion singled up the middle to lead off the inning and Paige Goss knocked a single before both advanced a base on a throwing error by the Charlotte short stop. Borgaard then singled to left field to score Concepcion and put the Phoenix ahead 5-4. Borgaard stole second and Sadie Ball walked to load the bases before Debbie Zeigler singled through the left side to plate Goss and Borgaard and give Elon the 7-4 advantage. Laurin Smith singled up the middle to score Ball and give Elon its fourth run of the inning.

The Phoenix added a run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Borgaard that plated Jessica Swearengin to give Elon the final 9-4 win.

Elon took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Concepcion led off the game with a homer over the right field fence. The Phoenix added another run when Zeigler knocked a solo homerun in the top of the second.

The 49ers tied the game in the bottom of the second. With runners on second and third Kristi Killough doubled to right center to score both runners and knot the game at two.

Swearengin singled to lead off the third inning and stole second before Concepcion knocked a single down the right field line to score Swearengin. Borgaard then singled to score Concepcion and give Elon the 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Becky Holt scored off of a Killough double to right center to cut the lead to one at 4-3. In the bottom of the fifth J.J. McVay knocked a solo homer over the left field fence to tie the game at four.

Whitney Meeks (8-9) picked up the win for Elon after tossing five innings and giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out two. Meredith Gay threw two innings in relief and gave up two hits while fanning four batters. Kristen Bowen (12-20) suffered the loss for Charlotte after throwing a complete game and giving up nine runs on 15 hits while striking out 10 batters.

Zeigler was three-for-three from the plate with three RBI for Elon while Concepcion was three-for-four with two RBI and three runs and Borgaard was two-for-four with three RBI and one run. Swearengin also tallied two hits for ELon with two runs. Killough led the 49ers from the plate going two-for-three with three RBI.

Game two remained scoreless heading into the top of the sixth inning. Goss singled to left field to start off the inning before Borgaard doubled to right center to score Goss and give Elon the decisive run.

Carol Lilley (4-1) registered the win for Elon giving up only two hits in a complete game and striking out two while facing only 23 batters. Christy Murray (5-16) threw a complete game for Charlotte giving up one run on seven hits and fanning four batters.

Tracey Dahlen led Elon from the plate, going two-for-three.

Elon returns to action on Saturday, April 30 in a 1 p.m. doubleheader with Southern Conference opponent Georgia Southern at East Field.
