SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference has crowned Elon University baseball player Gary Morris the TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 25.
The Franklin, N.C., native was crowned the Southern Conference Player of the Week Monday. Morris batted .500 with nine runs scored, a double, a triple, three home runs and nine RBI as the Phoenix fashioned a three-game sweep at Appalachian State Thursday through Saturday in Elon’s lone contests of the week following final exams.
The team co-captain finished 6-for-12 and was walked five times and hit by a pitch twice in his other plate appearances in Boone, N.C., last week. Slugging 1.500 with 18 total bases for the week, Morris rapped two homers – for his first career two-homer game – and five RBI in the series opener before adding a homer and four RBI in the middle game of the series.
Morris was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-District III Thursday. He graduated cum laude from Elon Saturday with a final 3.66 cumulative grade-point average in environmental studies.
