CARY, N.C. -- The Elon women's soccer team rode strong goalie play from Lizz Johnson for the second consecutive outing to earn a 1-1 tie with Liberty in the Summitt Hospitality Classic. The Phoenix earned ties in both of its tournament games to move to 0-1-2 on the year. The Lady Flames now sit at 1-1-2.
Following a scoreless first half, Liberty took the lead when Kendall Bartholomew headed in a cross from Hannah Sullivan at the 46:49 mark for her first goal of the season.
Less the seven minutes later, Elon's Kerri Speers scored her first collegiate goal when she sent Tina Longo's corner into the back of the net at 53:04 to even the score.
From there neither team was able to score again. In the two overtime periods no shots were recorded.
Both Johnson and Liberty's Sonia Rodriguez finished the day with five saves.
Elon will play its first home match of the season on Friday afternoon when it hosts Oregon at 4:00 p.m.
