After a 3-3 tie in the fifth game, Elon scored the next three points to go ahead 6-3 and never look back. The Phoenix posted a .368 hitting percentage for the game while Georgia Southern hit -.053 and closed the match with a 15-7 win on a kill from Mandy Wilson.
The Eagles won games one and two by scores of 30-27 and 30-20. Jennifer Schenk and Amy Haines combined for 16 kills in the first two games with nine and seven, respectively. Georgia Southern held the Phoenix to a .089 hitting percentage and allowed no aces over the two frames.
In the last three games of the five-game match, Elon hit .289. The Phoenix had 11 blocks, including two solos from Gigon (pictured right) and five assists from Wilson. The Eagles hit .114 in the final three, managing only 30 kills.
In game three, the Eagles went up early and led by as much as four before Elon knotted the game 21-21 on a kill from Jessica Barrow. After a 23-23 tie, Elon took the lead on a kill from Gigon and held on to close the game 30-26 on a Barrow kill.
Tied 10-10 in the fourth game, the Phoenix got back-to-back blocks to go up 12-10. Elon kept the lead, and extended the advantage to as much as eight, before finishing the game 30-23 on a kill from Gigon to force a fifth game.
For Georgia Southern (8-6, 2-4 SoCon), Christy Dowd finished with double-digit kills (18) and digs (23) for the second day in a row. Rounding out the GSU scoring were Schenk (14) and Haines (12). Schenk, Mae Chabra and Natalie Rodriguez each had two service aces on the day.
Elon (6-11, 4-3 SoCon) was led by Gigon with 18 kills and 13 digs while Britany Westphal posted 16 kills and nine digs and Barrow recorded 15 kills. Emily Downing registered 11 kills and posted 14 digs and Wilson added 11 kills. Brooke Pickard led the defense with 20 kills while Emily Regan posted 36 assists and Natalie Moore notched 20 assists.
Elon returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 11 in a 7 p.m. match with High Point in Alumni Gym.
