TEGA CAY, S.C. – Samantha Widmer fired a two-under-par 70 in final-round action as the Elon women's golf team captured the Shamrock Invitational championship for the second consecutive year Sunday afternoon on the 5,842-yard Tega Cay Golf Club course.
Widmer (pictured right) claimed medalist honors (81-77-70–228), edging out Bucknell's Amy Loughney (77-77-76–230) for first place out of 74 competitors. Teammate Taylor Johnson (74-80-78–232) finished in a tie for third place in the three-round, three-day tournament.
The Phoenix (311-323-300–934) carded a 12-over-par 300 – the lowest team round of the tournament – Sunday to stave off host Winthrop (322-312-302–936) for the title. Longwood (314-334-323–971) and Bucknell (330-322-319–971) ended up in a tie for third place in the 13-team standings.
Kennesaw State (322-333-318–973), High Point (325-334-318–977), Gardner-Webb (324-330-329–983), Jackson State (336-336-327–999), Appalachian State (344-351-325–1020), The Citadel (355-343-337–1035), Radford (345-354-343–1042), St. Francis of Pennsylvania (331-359-352–1042), and St. Mary's of Indiana (356-356-339–1051) rounded out the rest of the field.
Kelly Baytos (12th/79-82-76–237), Danielle Mills (19th/77-89-76–242) and Kristin Tremoulis (Tied-37th/87-84-82–253) all scored for the Phoenix during the course of the weekend.
