Elon Shows Potential in Midweek Practices

ELON, N.C. – Elon's football players put two more midweek practices behind them, completing the ninth and 10th sessions of their 2006 spring football practice schedule Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon at the Hunt Field and the Tucker Field practice facility.

“We've had two pretty physical and competitive practices so far this week,” said Elon coach Pete Lembo. “It always excites me to phase in the red zone, goal line and short yardage components of our package. You have to perform at your best in those situations, because the opportunities are limited."

Offensive highlights for the week include tailback T.J. Clegg breaking through on a power play for a long touchdown run and tight end Anthony Barcel hauling in a touchdown pass from quarterback Shayne Milligan.

“We have executed well in all three phases of the game at times, but need to do so with greater consistency,” said Lembo. “With just five practice sessions remaining, there has to be a real sense of urgency to get better and finish strong.”

Defensive highlights for the week include defensive backs Chris Bland and Zach McAlister each snagging interceptions and linebacker Danny Boback tallying two tackles for loss in the goal line scrimmage.

Linebacker Jeremy Barrett has begun taking reps with the second unit, replacing Tommy Hill, who injured his knee Tuesday. Hill hopes to return to the lineup next week.
