Mountaineers Eliminate Elon from SoCon Tournament

With two outs, Brittany Gaston singled to right field and advanced to second when Diana Cook drew a walk. Lindsay Glover then singled to right field and Gaston beat out a throw to home plate to take the 2-1 lead.

Elon had its best chance to even the score in the bottom of the sixth inning. With runners on first and second and no outs, Laurin Smith put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners but the Phoenix could not get a run across the plate.

Elon took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Tracey Dahlen knocked her second home run in as many days to give the Phoenix a 1-0 advantage.

In the top of the third, with runners on second and third Cook knocked a fly ball to right field and Natalie Willis scored from third to knot the game, 1-1.

Yancy Moose (11-8) picked up the win after hurling six and two-third innings in relief and giving up no runs on four hits while striking out five batters.

Carol Lilley (5-10) tossed a complete game for the Phoenix and gave up two runs on three hits while retiring three batters.

Gaston, Glover and Willis each recorded a hit for the Mountaineers.

Zeigler led the Phoenix from the plate with two hits on three at-bats while Dahlen, Rebecca Rijavec, Jaimie Rao and Patti Weber each recorded a hit for Elon.
