SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Elon junior right-handed pitcher Steven Hensley (Asheville, N.C.) was chosen as the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Month for February as announced by the league on Thursday afternoon. For Hensley, this is his third career SoCon Pitcher of the Week accolade. He has helped the Phoenix get off to a 15-1 start this season, the best-ever NCAA Division I start for the program.
In two February starts, Hensley went 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA. He hurled 12.2 innings and allowed just two earned runs while walking only four and striking out 12. Opponents hit just .159 off of him, managing just seven hits in 44 at bats.
Hensley was a preseason All-SoCon selection and is now 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA. He has fanned 23 and walked just seven in 20.2 innings of work. With his 23 K's he has moved into fourth on Elon's career strikeout list with 226. He is just seven shy of the 233 punch-outs recorded by Whit Bryant from 1999-2002.
Hensley will throw in Elon's Southern Conference opener on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. against The Citadel from Latham Park.
