Garren Earns Academic All-America Accolades

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Elon University cross country runner Eric Garren (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) has been selected to the 2007-08 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Third Team (University Division) as announced Monday afternoon by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

The athletes were nominated by their sports information directors and named to eight Academic All-District squads by a vote of CoSIDA members, leading to over 80 candidates on the national ballot for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America consideration. Garren emerged as the lone Southern Conference athlete and one of just five District III honorees to be chosen to the 45-member Academic All-America team.

A two-time First Team Academic All-District III selection, Garren graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor of science degree from Elon last month with a 3.96 cumulative grade-point average as a business administration/management major and an accounting minor. The eight-time President's List and Athletics Director's Honor Roll student appeared regularly on the TIAA-CREF Academic All-Southern Conference team and the Southern Conference Commissioner’s Medal list during his time at Elon.

Garren was recognized as the male A.L. Hook Scholar-Athlete at the annual Elon Athletics Awards Banquet last month, acknowledging him as the Phoenix student-athlete who possesses the highest cumulative GPA. It marked the second consecutive year that he received that accolade. The four-year cross country letterman finished in 31st place out of 84 competitors at the Southern Conference Championship last fall. He was also honored as his team's MVP in 2006 and captain in 2007.

An Elon Leadership Fellow, Garren was also inducted into four National Honor Societies – Beta Gamma Sigma (International Business), Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Gamma Mu (Social Science). He served on the recruitment and scholarship committees for his Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and was also a Student-Athlete Advisory Council representative and a Student Government Association class senator and student election committee member.

In Elon’s nine years as an official NCAA Division I member, Phoenix student-athletes have commandeered CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades on 13 occasions. Winner of the National Magazine Award for General Excellence in both 2003 and 2006, ESPN The Magazine is a provocative sports publication that is full of insight, analysis, impact and wit. With a circulation of 1.9 million, the oversized biweekly magazine looks ahead to give fans a unique perspective on the world of sports.
