WISE, Va. – Elon senior Whitney Butcher (Ashland, Ky./Paul G. Blazer) recently captured the women’s A singles bracket of the 35th Annual The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Tennis Tournament at the Jim Humphreys Tennis Complex on the UVA-Wise campus.
Following a first-round bye, Butcher dispatched Rachael Juhan 6-2, 6-0 in a semifinal match before ousting Kelsey Adkins 6-0, 6-0 in the final for the title. Partnered with her father, Mike Butcher, she also advanced to the final of the mixed doubles bracket at the tournament.
After a first-round bye, the Butchers beat Elijah Hankins and Star Bresee 6-2, 6-2 in a quarterfinal meeting. They then went on to defeat Danny Wood and Andi Kilgore 6-3, 7-5 in a semifinal contest before falling to David Dotson and Phyllis Wood 6-3, 6-2 in the final.
With Butcher’s help, the Phoenix women’s tennis team finished among the top five squads in the 10-team Southern Conference the past two years. Last spring, Elon advanced to the SoCon Tournament semifinals for the first time in the program’s five-year membership in the league.
