WILMINGTON, N.C. – Senior Clark Howell and junior Cody Stauffer-MacDowell helped the Elon men’s tennis team end its fall season on a high note, winning three straight matches at the UNCW Fall Invitational to win the Flight B Doubles bracket. Stauffer-MacDowell also made it to the semifinals of the Flight B singles bracket while freshman teammate Carlos Arboleda went 2-1 in the Flight A singles draw.
“It was great to see Clark and Cody win in doubles especially because Clark is a senior and he was competing in his final tournament,” said Elon head coach Mike Leonard.
Howell and Stauffer-MacDowell opened the tournament with an 8-6 victory over Liran Levy and Diego Toledo of Winthrop. The duo followed up that performance with an 8-4 win against Anton Nikolov and Alex Wetherell of host UNC Wilmington. On Sunday morning, Stauffer-MacDowell and Howell remained undefeated with an 8-6 finals victory over UNC Greensboro’s Jacob Wright and Yaroslav Litus.
In singles action, Stauffer-MacDowell earned a straight-set win against Max Ando-Hirsch of UNCG, beating the fellow Southern Conference member by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Stauffer-MacDowell also defeated Winthrop’s Guy Kubi, 6-2, 7-6 (1), before falling in the semifinals to Chris Cooprider of UNCW.
Arboleda had a strong showing in the top singles bracket, cruising to a 6-1, 6-3 win over North Carolina Central’s Patrick Olobo in his first match. He dropped a three-set match to UNCW’s Kinshuk Sharma, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, but rebounded on Sunday to post a hard-fought 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (5) victory against Sergey Belov of Winthrop.
Elon will look forward to dual match play which will begin in mid-January.
