Elon Third in Commissioner, Germann Cup Standings

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- At the completion of the fall season, the Elon Phoenix men's and women's athletic programs rate third in the standings for the Southern Conference's Commissioner's and Germann Cups.

The Commissioner's Cup is awarded annually to the top scoring men's program in the league while the Germann Cup is handed out to the top scoring women's program each year.  Schools earn points based upon its regular season finish, with two bonus points going to the team that wins the conference tournament.

The Elon men racked up 24.5 points thanks to a third-place tie in football, a fourth-place tie in soccer and a sixth-place finish in cross country.  Appalachian State currently leads the Commissioner's Cup race with 32 points followed by Furman with 26 points.

In the race for the Germann Cup, Elon has tallied 27 points, one back of second-place Samford and six shy of UNC Greensboro.  The Phoenix's showing was bolstered by the volleyball team's North Division title and fifth-place finishes in both soccer and cross country.

The Commissioner’s Cup was inaugurated in 1970 and the Germann Cup was first awarded in 1987.  The latter is named after former SoCon Commissioner, Ken Germann, who served as commissioner of the Southern Conference from 1974-86 and spearheaded the effort to introduce women’s athletics to the league.
