Elon Set for Showdown Against Regional Host Georgia

ELON, N.C. – The Elon softball team will makes its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Softball Championship on Friday at 5 p.m. when it takes on the Athens Regional host Georgia Bulldogs at 5 p.m. on Friday. The Phoenix (38-19) earned the Southern Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with a win over UNC Greensboro last week. Friday’s game will mark the second time this season that Elon has faced Georgia (43-11). The Bulldogs came away with an 8-2 win, but Elon was the only team to score against then-fourth-ranked Georgia during the tournament. The winner of the game will take on the winner of the Florida State and Radford game at 12 p.m. on Saturday, while the losers of both games will play one another on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Quick Notes
• Elon is 0-1 this season and 6-24 all-time against the Athens Regional field, which also includes teams from Florida State and Radford. The Phoenix is 0-5 against Georgia, 0-2 against FSU and trails Radford 17-6 all-time.
• The Phoenix is the number four seed at the Athens Regional. The Bulldogs, who are the number six national seed, will play as the regional’s one seed. Florida State will be the tournament’s two seed, while Radford earned the three seed.
• For their efforts this season Erin O’Shea, Tomeka Watson and Emerald Graham earned all-region honors by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Watson, the 2010 SoCon Freshman of the Year, and O;Shea were named to the first team, while Graham garnered second-team honors.
• The 38 wins by the Phoenix are the most in program history.
