SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Four Elon Phoenix baseball players collected All-Southern Conference honors as voted on by the league's media. The teams were announced on Tuesday morning. Collecting first-team accolades for Elon were starting pitcher
Jimmy Reyes and shortstop
Neal Pritchard. Catcher
Mike Melillo and outfielder
Matt Hinson garnered second-team honors.
Reyes, a lefty from Miami, Fla., has gone 9-3 (including 8-1 in league play) with a 4.38 ERA. He has one complete game shutout in 14 appearances this season and has logged 86.1 innings on the mound. In that span, Reyes has struck out 86 hitters while issuing just 18 walks and earned one SoCon Pitcher of the Week nod this year. He currently rates fifth all-time at Elon with 227 career strikeouts and sports a career record of 20-3.
Pritchard, a junior from Asheboro, N.C., leads the Phoenix with a .357 batting average. The only player to start all 56 contest for Elon this year, Pritchard has scored 52 runs, has 15 doubles, 11 home runs, 44 RBI and has been hit by 20 pitches. He sports a team-best .474 on-base percentage. In SoCon games, Pritchard has hit .353, scored 31 times, driven in 27 runs and belted seven homers.
Melillo earned his nod after hitting .317 and leading the Phoenix with 56 runs scored, five triples and 54 RBI during his senior season. A native of Annandale, N.J., Melillo's 11 home runs this season have propelled him into the top spot on Elon's career homers chart. He now has 39 career dingers. Melillo has been successful on 12 of his 17 stolen base attempts while earning one SoCon Player of the Week honor in 2010. He also ranks among Elon's career top-10 in at bats (10th; 631), runs scored (6th; 164), hits (10th; 202) and RBI (6th; 161).
Hinson was selected after having a career season. The senior from Siler City, N.C. hit a team-high 16 home runs while hitting .315 over 51 games. Hinson scored 45 runs while adding eight doubles and two triples on his way to a .673 slugging percentage, the highest on the squad. During SoCon tilts, Hinson hit .296 with six homers, 25 RBI and 22 runs scored.
Elon begins play in the 2010 Southern Conference Tournament on Wednesday night at 9 p.m. against Samford.
