SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Jackie Gonzalez of the 2010 Southern Conference Champion Elon softball team was named the SoCon Player of the Month for May. It is the first time in her career that she has earned the honor and the second time this season that a member of the Phoenix squad took home player of the month honors. Emerald Graham was awarded the honor for the month of March.
Gonzalez was one of two Elon student-athletes who took home March player of the month honors, as Jimmy Reyes of the baseball team was named the league’s pitcher of the month.
Gonzalez led the team with a .442 batting average over 12 games in the month of May to help guide the Phoenix to its first-ever SoCon Championship in a women’s sport. She had six multiple-hit games during the month, including a 4-for-4 performance against Winthrop on May 8. During that contest, Gonzalez also drew a walk and scored a run.
In the Southern Conference Tournament, the Suwanee, Ga., native was an integral part of Elon’s seventh-inning rally that clinched the title. With a no one out and a runner at second, Gonazlez reached on an infield single. She later scored the go-ahead run on a single by Graham.
During Elon’s NCAA Regional appearance, Gonzalez went 4-for-6 over two games for a .667 batting average. She registered three hits and scored a run against eventual Women’s College World Series participant Georgia. During the two-game stretch, Gonzalez had an on-base percentage and slugging percentage of .667.
