ELON, N.C. – Winners of eight out of its last nine games, the Elon University women’s basketball team plays its first of back-to-back Southern Conference road games in three days on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 29, when the Phoenix (14-6, 8-3) heads to Cullowhee, N.C. to face the Western Carolina Catamounts (6-13, 4-6). Tip is set for 2 p.m. inside the Ramsey Center. Be sure to listen to the game on WSOE 89.3 FM with Brian Dudiak and Matt Curry on the call, with coverage beginning at 1:45 p.m.
THE SERIES: Elon and Western Carolina will be meeting for the 33rd time on Saturday. The Catamounts lead the all-time series, 17-15, after topping the Phoenix earlier this season in Elon, 74-64. The last time the two teams met in Cullowhee, Elon came away with a 59-54 victory over the Catamounts. Elon has a 7-5 mark all-time against WCU in Cullowhee.
ON THIS DATE: Elon has a 5-7 record all-time in games played on Jan. 29, including a 0-1 record against Western Carolina.
THE BAREFOOT FILE: Elon head coach
Karen Barefoot enters Saturday’s game with a 203-137 career record in her 13th season as a head coach, including a 31-51 mark in her third season with the Phoenix. Barefoot captured her 200th career victory earlier this season on Jan. 16 when the Phoenix topped Wofford, 64-47, in Spartanburg, S.C. Barefoot recorded 102 victories at Apprentice School in six seasons, leading her team to the 2001 NSCAA National title and coaching a total of seven All-American players. Barefoot recorded 70 wins at Lenoir-Rhyne in four seasons, leading the Bears to their first NCAA postseason appearance and SAC title in school history, while also earning league Coach of the Year honors. In three seasons at Elon, Barefoot has amassed 31 victories.
STREAK SNAPPED: Elon’s seven-game winning streak from Jan. 3 to Jan. 22 tied the longest winning streak by the program since the 2002-03 team also won seven in a row. The team’s eight-game Southern Conference winning streak this season is the longest conference winning streak the program has ever had since officially becoming a member of an athletic conference in 1977-78.
BLOCK PARTY: Kelsey Evans recorded her 100th block of her career against Appalachian State on Jan. 24, moving her to fourth all-time in Elon women’s basketball history. Evans needs seven more blocks to pass former teammate Urysla Cotton for third all-time. Elon currently leads the Southern Conference in blocked shots with 120 and went into this week ranked seventh nationally.
JANUARY JOY: Elon’s eight wins so far in January are the most in single month since the 2002-03 team also registered eight wins in January. Although the dates from the entire season are inconclusive, the most wins in January likely occurred during the 1981-82 season when Elon finished the season with a 25-5 overall record.
REACHING THE 70 POINT MARK: Elon has a perfect 8-0 record this season when it records 70 or more points. Elon is winning games by an average of 20.9 points when it scores 70 or more.
SURPASSING LAST SEASON: With 14 victories this season, Elon has already surpassed its win total from last season when the team won 12 games. The Phoenix has already surpassed its Southern Conference win total from last season with eight victories already in league play.
MOVING ON UP: Ali Ford scored 19 points in Elon’s 78-45 win over Southern Virginia on Thursday, Jan. 27, putting her at 830 for her career. Ford is currently fifth in the Southern Conference in scoring at 16.6 points per game.
THE BENCH BUNCH: Over the last 10 games, the Elon bench has outscored its counterparts 212-112. In its victory over Southern Virginia on Jan. 27, the Phoenix benched scored a season-high 39 points. On the year, Elon’s bench has outscored the opposition, 374-373.
HOME SWEET HOME: With its win over Southern Virginia, the Phoenix improved to 9-2 at home this season. Elon is outscoring opponents by a +12.6 margin at home and is averaging 72.4 points per game inside Alumni Gym.
WHITE OUT ALUMNI GYM: The newly renovated Alumni Gym will be packed full of Phoenix fans dressed in white on Thursday, Feb. 10, as the Elon women’s basketball team aims to take down cross-town rival UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m. Elon fans will receive a free T-shirt at the door.
ROAD TO CHATTANOOGA: The 2011 Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament will be held March 3-7 at the McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn. For additional information including ticket prices, go to SoConSports.com.
ELON ON THE BIG SCREEN: Elon’s Feb. 19 game at home against Samford will be televised on SportSouth. Tip-off between the Phoenix and Bulldogs is set for 2 p.m. inside Alumni Gym, with the Elon men’s game versus UNC Greensboro to follow at 8 p.m.
CONFERENCE STANDINGS: With a loss to Appalachian State on Jan. 24, Elon currently sits in second place in the Southern Conference with an 8-3 record behind the Mountaineers (9-2).
