SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon volleyball freshmen
Kris Harris and
Chanelle Smith were both named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Volleyball Team, as the conference announced its 2011 all-conference and individual award winners today, Nov. 16. Harris and Smith were two of seven freshmen to earn all-freshman honors, which was voted on by the league coaches.
Harris was one of two middle blockers to make the all-freshman team. The Apex, N.C., native ranks seventh in the conference in hitting (.331) and is second on the team in blocks (0.85 blocks pet set). Harris recorded a career-high 12 kills against Appalachian State and along with another career high of eight blocks against North Carolina Central. After earning all-tournament honors at the Elon Phoenix Classic, she was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19. On Oct. 24, she was honored as the SoCon Freshman of the Week.
Smith is second on the team in kills (260) and kills per set (2.68). The outside hitter also ranks third in defense with 2.40 digs per set. A native of Fayetteville, Ga., she set a career high and with 21 kills and 15 digs at Butler and was named to the Butler Invitational All-Tournament Team. Smith has recorded seven double-doubles this season and has earned both SoCon Offensive Player of the Week and SoCon Freshman of the Week.
The SoCon Volleyball Championship begins Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Pete Hanna Center on the campus of Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. Elon is the No. 4 North seed and will face No. 1 South seed College of Charleston on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
