ELON, N.C. -- Session two of Elon's scheduled 15 spring football practices was held on Monday afternoon on the Hunt and Tucker practice fields. The team worked out in shorts, jerseys and helmets for the second time for nearly two hours.
Head Coach Jason Swepson on installing a new system...
"Hopefully by the end of the fourth practice we pretty much have our whole playbook in – offense, defense and special teams. We put a lot in over the first couple of days and will tail off as the spring goes on. We're going to try and throw a bunch at them and see what sticks and we'll go from there. We're not going to slow down the pace. We do a lot of it in our meetings and then we have a 15-20 minute 'teach' period in the beginning of practice. We do half run and half pass, so by the time we get to it in the team periods they've already walked through it or gone through it a three-quarter speed."
Swepson on the intensity level at practice...
"I attribute the level of intensity to success. When you've won for so many years, you're doing something right. They know how to work, they know how to win. It's now 'how much do they want to win.' I think that's the step we're trying to take to put us in a position to win a conference championship."
Swepson on what has stood out to him early...
"I think the team is coming together. I don't think we're an offense and a defense, I think we're a team. I think we're gaining trust in everyone's ability and that the players are gaining trust in us as a staff. I'm real anxious to see if it continues once we get the pads on."
Swepson on what he's learned about his team...
"They practice at a high level. They work hard and take practice serious. They want to be good. I don't think there are any pretenders out here. At this point I'm very pleased with the work ethic and attention to detail. I've been impressed with the overall committment to the program and what we're trying to do."
The Phoenix will be back on the practice field at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. It will mark the first practice of the spring to be conducted in uppers as the Elon players will put on the shoulder pads.
