Baseball to Visit Western Carolina for SoCon Series

ELON, N.C. -- The Phoenix baseball team will hit the road for the second consecutive weekend in Southern Conference play as Elon travels to Western Carolina for a three-game series that gets underway at 4 p.m. on Friday.  Elon (12-6, 3-0) has won seven of its last nine games while the Catamounts (8-7, 0-3) split two mid-week games after being swept at UNC Greensboro last weekend.

Series History
After taking two of the three games a year ago, Elon now sports an all-time mark of 41-23 against Western Carolina. Since 2004 when Elon joined the SoCon, the Phoenix has gone 12-11 against the Catamounts. Six of those losses came in sweeps in Cullowhee in 2005 and 2007 and Elon has won eight of the last 10 meetings.

On Deck
Elon will continue its five-game road swing with two contests at Clemson this week before returning home to take on Samford next weekend.

SoCon Starts
Elon is now in its eighth season as a member of the Southern Conference. The Phoenix has compiled a 8-0 mark in its SoCon openers. Elon has also never dropped an opening series in SoCon play.

Closing it Out
Since 2007 Elon has been very good at closing out games. The Phoenix has gone a combined 143-11 (.929) when leading after seven innings and 147-12 (.925) when holding a lead following the eighth inning.

Three-Baggers
In game two of Elon’s doubleheader sweep of Appalachian State on March 12, the Phoenix legged out three triples. It marked the first time Elon had three triples in a game since Feb. 27, 2009 at Appalachian State.

In the March 12 doubleheader, Elon actually totaled five triples.

400
Elon’s 6-2 victory over Wright State on March 5 marked the 400th win of the program’s tenure at the NCAA Division I level. Elon’s first year of Division I play was the 2000 season.
