Elon Pair Honored by SoCon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Elon senior pitcher Thomas Girdwood and freshman second baseman Sebastian Gomez were honored by the Southern Conference as the league's Pitcher and Co-Player of the Week, respectively on Monday.

The duo helped the Phoenix to a 4-1 week which saw Elon run its overall record to 30-17 and its SoCon mark to a league-leading 18-6.  Elon has now won 30 or more games for 12 consecutive seasons.

Girdwood set career-highs with 10 strikeouts in 8.0 innings of work as Elon downed Davidson 8-2 on Saturday.  The Charlotte, N.C. native did not allow a hit in his final four innings of work and retired 10 of the final 11 hitters he faced.  The former closer, who is the SoCon's all-time leader in saves, surrendered just one run and no extra-base hits in his sixth career start.  This marks the first weekly league honor for Girdwood during his four years with the Phoenix.

On the year, Girdwood now owns a 3-4 overall record with a 3.45 ERA.  In 47.0 innings, he has struck out 35 and is holding opponents to a .234 batting average.

Gomez, who hails from Miramar, Fla., recorded two or more hits in all five games last week (and six consecutive games overall) and is currently sporting an eight-game hitting streak.  He added eight RBI and scored seven runs while also notching three stolen bases.  Gomez hit .545 with a .565 on-base percentage and an .864 slugging percentage for the week.  This is the first SoCon weekly honor for Gomez.

In 39 games as a true freshman this year, Gomez is hitting a team-best .323 with 21 runs scored and 22 RBI.  He also has five doubles, a triple, two homers and is a perfect 9-for-9 in stolen base attempts.

Girdwood, Gomez and the Phoenix will be back in action on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at UNC Wilmington before travelling to The Citadel for a three-game SoCon set this weekend.
