TUCSON, Ariz. -- Elon second baseman
Sebastian Gomez (Miramar, Fla.) was recognized as a member of the 2011 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team which is selected by Collegiate Baseball.
Gomez is Elon's third Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, joining 2006 selection Steven Hensley and 2008 honoree
Thomas Girdwood.
A second-team All-SoCon and SoCon All-Freshman Team selection, Gomez led the Phoenix with a .305 batting average. In 49 games (44 starts) he scored 30 runs and drove in 28 while successfully stealing 14 bases in 15 attempts. Gomez finished the year with six doubles, a triple and two homers. His performance helped Elon capture its fourth SoCon title, and third in four years, as the Phoenix ended the season with a 36-21 overall record and a 23-7 league mark.
At one point this season, Gomez put together a 10-game hitting streak which included eight consecutive multi-hit outings. He drove in a career-best three runs with a 3-for-5, two-double, two-runs scored performance in a victory over Davidson. Gomez connected on his first homer in a 9-0 win at Georgia Southern in what proved to be skipper
Mike Kennedy's 500th career victory.
