ELON, N.C. -- The Elon University baseball team has announced the additions of three transfer pitchers to the roster for the 2012 season. Joining the Phoenix program will be left-handers Spencer Medick (Baton Rouge, La./Polk State College) and Andrew MacDonald (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Lenoir CC) and righty Nate Young (Kalamazoo, Michigan/Lincoln Trail College).
The 6-3, 200-pound Medick posted a 7-3 record along with a 3.21 ERA in 18 appearances for Polk State a year ago. In 81.1 innings he struck out 60 and issued just 27 walks. Medick fanned seven hitters against both Palm Beach State and Manatee-Sarasota in his sophomore campaign in 2011 en route to claiming first-team All-Suncoast Conference honors. He was also a President's List honoree at Polk State. Medick spent his freshman season at Hampden-Sydney College where he made just three relief appearances. In 2.2 innings he struck out four.
Prior to college, Medick played high school baseball at Woodberry Forest School in Virginia for Henry Heil. As a prep Medick was a team captain and team MVP as a senior. That final season he also claimed all-prep honors. He was a three-year starter.
Spencer is the son of former Miami baseball player Michael and Toni Medick.
MacDonald, who stands 5-10 and is 150 pounds, was 5-3 with a 2.49 ERA in 10 appearances for Lenoir Community College in 2011. As a sophomore he hurled 54.1 innings and struck out 57 while walking 21. In a three-inning stint against New River Community College, MacDonald fanned eight hitters. Seven days later he struck out nine in four innings against St. Clair County Community College. Prior to attending Lenoir, MacDonald played one season at UNC Pembroke where he went 3-0 in eight appearances (four starts). In 23.2 innings he struck out 29 and walked 13. Nine of his K's came in a five-inning start against Wingate.
MacDonald attended Pinecrest High School where he earned all-league honors in both 2008 and 2009. He was the 2009 team MVP and helped coach Jeff Hewitt's squad to a 2008 conference crown.
Andrew is the son of former Seneca College hockey player Randy and Darlene MacDonald.
The 6-0, 175-pound Young made nine appearances for Lincoln Trail as a sophomore in 2011, going 2-6 with a 3.43 ERA. He fanned 51 hitters and issued 23 free passes in 42.0 innings. Young twice recorded 10 strikeouts, the first coming in seven innings against Kaskaskia College and the second in six frames against Southeastern Illinois College. As a freshman at Southeastern University in 2010, Young tossed nine innings over six games. He went 1-0 with 14 strikeouts and five walks that season. He also saw plenty of action at the plate in 2010. Young hit .355 with 36 runs scored, 14 doubles, two triples a homer and 23 RBI in 50 games.
As a prep at Kalamazoo Christian High Young was a two-time Class C&D player of the year. Following his junior campaign, Young was named all-league, all-district, all-region and first-team all-state as a shortstop. As a pitcher his senior year Young collected all-conference, all-district, all-region and first-team all-state accolades. He played for coach Brent Bonnema.
A member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors group, Nate is the son of Rick and Susan Young. His brother is currently enrolled in Elon's physical therapy program.
