Summer League Baseball Update: July 8

Fifteen Elon Phoenix baseball players are continuing to play over the summer as they have joined summer league teams across the country.  Elon is represented in the Cape Cod League, Northwoods League, Valley League, Coastal Plain League and the Hamptons Collegiate League.

Catcher Alex Swim is representing the Phoenix in the prestigious Cape Cod League where he plays for the Harwich Mariners.  The Mariners are currently 14-9 on the summer and are leading the Eastern Division.  In 12 games for the Mariners, Swim is hitting .140 with six runs scored.

Also playing in the Cape Cod League is Elon pitcher John Brebbia.  Brebbia, who was drafted in the 30th round of the MLB Draft by the New York Yankees, has helped the Orleans Firebirds to a 11-9-3 ledger and a third-place standing in the Eastern Division.  A rising senior, Brebbia has made six appearances, including two starts.  In 14.0 innings he has allowed three earned runs, walked two and struck out 13.  Brebbia is 0-1 with a 1.93 ERA.

Outfielder Niko Fraser is playing in for the Northwoods League's Madison Mallards.  The Mallards went 21-14 to finish in a four-way tie for South Division first-half title.  The team won its only game of the second half.  Fraser has appeared in 24 games and is hitting .310 with 18 runs scored, five doubles and six RBI.  He has also stolen six bases in eight attempts.

Five Elon players will see action in the Valley League this summer.  Infielder Chris Bresnahan and outfielder Eric Serra are both playing for the Haymarket Senators while catcher Eric Hailer and left-handed pitcher Ryan Pennell have suited up for the Strasburg Express.  Finally, second baseman Sebastian Gomez is playing for the Waynesboro Generals.

The Senators are currently 10-18 and in third place in the North Division.  Bresnahan is hitting .321 after appearing in 21 games, including 15 starts.  He has two doubles and has scored 11 runs.  He has stolen three bases in four attempts.  In five games, Serra is hitting .353 with six runs scored, one double, one homer and four RBI.  He has also swiped four bases in five tries.

Strasburg currently sits at 9-19 and is in fourth place in the North.  Hailer has started 15 of the 16 games in which he has appeared and is hitting .220 for the Express.  Two of his 13 hits are doubles and he has one homer.  Hailer has scored eight runs and driven in 10.  Pennell has made six appearances totaling 9.2 innings.  He has posted 13 strikeouts.

In first place in the South are the Generals who have a record of 17-11.  In nine games, Gomez is hitting .200 with eight runs scored, one double and one RBI.  Gomez has stolen four bags in seven tries.

Another five players are spending their summer in the Coastal Plain League.  Joining forces with the Thomasvill HiToms are infielder Garrett Koster and catcher Ryan Kinsella.  Outfielder Jake Luce will be playing for the Morehead City Marlins, first baseman Grant McCoury will don the uniform of the Asheboro Copperheads and right-handed pitcher Brad MacHaffie will play for the Forest City Owls.

The HiToms went 14-14 in the first half and finished in fourth place in the West.  The team currently sits atop the West standings with a 5-1 second-half mark.  Kinsella earned the start in 18 of his 20 appearances and is hitting .228.  The rising sophomore has four doubles, two homers and 12 RBI.  He has also scored nine runs.  Koster has appeared in 29 games, making 22 starts, and is hitting .190.  He has two home runs and has driven in 12 while scoring 13 times.  He has also stolen five bases.

The Marlins finished the first half in third place in the South with a 14-14 record.  In the second half, the team is 3-3 and in third place in the division.  In 28 games, Luce is hitting .212 and has one double and one homer.  He has scored 15 runs and is 3-for-4 in stolen base attempts.

McCoury helped the Copperheads to a 16-11 first half to capture first place in the West.  Asheboro is 1-4 in the second half.  McCoury has appeared in seven games and is looking for his first hit of the summer.  On the mound, he has made four appearances, logging eight innings.  McCoury sports a 2.25 ERA and is holding opponents to a .200 batting average.

Forest City tied Asheboro for the first-half West crown with a 16-11 mark.  The Owls are 3-2 in the second half.  MacHaffie has made five appearances out of the bullpen that have covered 6.2 innings.

Two righies, Grant Fisher and John Antonelli are both playing for the Sag Harbor Whalers in the Hamptons League.

The Whalers have posted an 11-12 mark to sit in fourth in the league.  Antonelli has logged 14.2 innings, allowing just two earned runs while scattering 12 hits and striking out seven in seven appearances out of the pen.  He is 1-0 with one save and a 1.23 ERA.  Fisher is 1-1 with a 3.48 ERA in five relief outings.  He has thrown 10.1 innings this summer, striking out five.
