Phoenix Falls Short in Season Finale

Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Senior wide receiver Aaron Mellette caught nine passes for 188 yards and one touchdown, but the Elon Phoenix ended its 2012 season with a hard-fought 24-17 loss to the Chattanooga Mocs.

The Phoenix (3-8, 1-7 Southern Conference) got the ball to start the game and marched to the Chattanooga 12 before Adam Shriener hit a 29-yard field goal, the 50th of his career, to give the maroon and gold a 3-0 lead.  The big play on the drive came when Thomas Wilson absorbed a hit, but found a wide open Mellette for a 46-yard completion on third-and-seven from its own 24.

Chattanooga (6-5, 5-3) came right back and tied the game at three on a 30-yard field goal from Nick Pollard.  On its next possession, the Mocs moved to the Elon 11 on the final play of the first quarter when Jacob Huesman found Tommy Hudson for 55 yards.  On third-and-one, Huesman took it in for the game's first touchdown to make it a 10-3 contest.

Following a UTC punt, Elon took possession at its own 11.  The Phoenix marched 89 yards to tie the score at 10 when Wilson found an open Kierre Brown in the end zone.  Elon converted twice on third down on the drive, once on a Wilson scramble and again with a six-yard run by Tracey Coppedge on third-and-one on the play before the TD toss.

After forcing a Mocs punt on the first drive of the second half, Elon fumbled the ball on the second play of its first drive of the period.  Chattanooga turned it into seven points and a 17-10 lead when Huesman tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Terrell Robinson.

The Mocs extended their lead to 24-10 later in the third quarter when Huesman connected with Robinson for a 67-yard catch and run.

The Phoenix pulled within seven with just over five minutes to go in the game when Wilson hit Mellette for a 57-yard touchdown.  It was Mellette's 18th TD reception of the season, matching Terrell Hudgins for the second-most ever in the SoCon in a season.

But Elon would not get the ball back as the Mocs ran out the clock to secure the victory.

Jonathan Spain made a game-high 10 tackles, his eighth consecutive double-digit stop performance, to end the year with 120 total tackles on the season.

Coppedge ran the ball 17 times for a career-best 88 yards.  Wilson ended the day with 295 passing yards and two touchdowns while completing 23 of his 32 pass attempts.  He ended his career with 6,649 passing yards.

Mellette concluded his stellar career in the maroon and gold with 23 100-yard games and 4,254 receiving yards.  He also had 304 catches and 44 touchdowns.

For Chattanooga, Huesman passed for 234 yards and two scores while running for another 109 yards and one touchdown.
