Game One Box Score
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Dylan Clark tossed eight innings and
Alex Swim went 5-for-5 in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader as Elon defeated Samford 7-4. Game two was suspended in the top of the seventh inning with the score tied at one due to a thunderstorm.
Clark improved to 6-1 on the year after he allowed four runs on seven hits in eight innings. He struck out five.
Nate Young tossed a perfect ninth to claim his fifth save as the Phoenix improved to 16-11 overall and 9-4 in the SoCon.
Garrett Koster's three-run homer, his seventh of the year, broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning and proved to be the difference in the game. He has now homered in three consecutive games and is the first Elon player to do so since Mike Melillo did so in 2010.
Elon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. With one out,
Sebastian Gomez singled and went to third when Swim extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a single to become the first Phoenix player with a hit streak of at least 20 games since Cory Harrilchak's 20-game streak in 2009.
Ryan Kinsella's double down the left field line drove home the first two runs. Kinsella later scored from third when
Jake Luce reached on an error.
The Phoenix added one in the third when Luce singled home Gomez.
Samford (17-9, 7-3) answered with a three-run third. With runners on the corners, Brad Moss hit a homer to make it 4-3. In the fourth, the Bulldogs knotted the score when Phillip Ervin came home on a Tommy Corbin single.
Kyle Putkonen (1-4) took the loss after being charged with seven runs on 10 hits in four innings.
Game two saw Samford take an early 1-0 lead in the last of the first when Zeth Stone scored on a Saxon Butler single.
Elon tied the game at one in the sixth. Swim, who had already run his hitting streak to 21 games, led off with a single and went to second on a Koster single. Following a sac bunt, Luce lifted a fly ball down the left field line that allowed Swim to tag and score.
The Phoenix escaped a jam in the last of the seventh as Samford loaded the bases, but
Jordan Darnell came on and got an infield fly and a double play to end the inning.
When lightning was spotted in the seventh, Elon's
Chris Bresnahan was on third after a double and sac bunt.
The game will be resumed at 1 p.m. Eastern on Sunday.
