MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- Elon used strong pitching and timely hitting to earn a doubleheader sweep of a Southern Conference baseball series at 30th-ranked College of Charleston on Sunday. The Phoenix, which improved to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the SoCon, has now won each of its nine league-opening series. The Cougars are now 7-3, 1-2.
Game 1 (Elon 4, CofC 2)
In the opening game,

Grant McCoury recorded the final out to pick up the first save of his career.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the third inning,

Elon struck again in the third. With
Niko Fraser on first with two outs, the speedy outfielder stole second and headed to third when the throw went into center. A
Casey Jones single plated Fraser with the go-ahead run. After a passed ball moved Jones up 90 feet, Serra singled again to drive home Jones. Serra would later score from third on a double steal as the Phoenix built a 4-1 lead.
College of Charleston loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eight. With two down Fraser made the play of the game as he robbed Dre Watts of a grand slam with a leaping catch at the fence. The Cougars' ninth began with a hit batter and a walk. The bags became full on a Rob Harding single before the Phoenix recorded the first out, a strike out. Daniel Aldrich drew a bases loaded walk to force home the second CofC tally. Elon then struck out a hitter and got a pop-up to end the game.

Nate Young slammed the door closed in the last of the 10th for his first save.
With the game knotted at two and two outs in the top of the 10th,
Jake Luce drove an 0-1 pitch from David Peterson deep over the fence in right field to put the Phoenix on top.
Elon fell behind 2-0 in game two in the third inning on a sac fly and RBI fielder's choice.
In the top of the sixth, Serra was plunked and then swiped second before a one-out sac bunt moved him to third.
Alex Swim drove Serra home with the first Phoenix run.
