ELON, N.C. -- After holding its first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday, the Elon football team returned to the Hunt and Tucker practice fields on Tuesday morning. The team worked out for roughly two hours in uppers.
Here are coach
Jason Swepson's thoughts on the weekend's scrimmage and Tuesday morning's practice:
On Saturday's scrimmage:
"We came out and had a half practice before we got into the scrimmage. They had a great half practice and carried it over into the scrimmage. We were flying around and didn't have that many mistakes. I was disappointed in the number of penalties we had, but that usually happens in the first scrimmage. Overall, I thought the tempo and execution were on the plus side. I'm real pleased with where we're at right now. We still have a lot of work to get done."
Who impressed you on Saturday:
"The receiving group, even without
Aaron Mellette in the scrimmage portion of the day, was still a great unit. The linebacker position, the starters are playing at an extremely fast pace. I was encouraged by the second offensive line. On their first drive, they took it 75 yards for a score. The good guys are playing well right now. We're just trying to find the back-ups."
On the progression of the offense:
"Our package is still limited because of the running back situation, but Coach Pincince has really done a lot of shifting and motion these last few practices. Right now we are trying to cut down on the penalties."
On the first practice following the scrimmage:
"We had a 10-minute teach period today and we had a long individual period. I was trying to get their minds right because we went three days in a row and had two days off. I just wanted a nice, easy practice in uppers today. We'll do a lot more team periods on Thursday."
On practicing three days in a row:
"They attacked it. The Friday night practice was special. They didn't save anything knowing that they had to go again on Saturday. I'm really pleased with their work ethic. The coaches are doing a good job of keeping them fresh. Right now it's full-speed ahead.
On the improvements he wants to see between now and the end of the spring:
"We have to continue to work on the fundamentals. On offense, we still have to create some running opportunities. On defense, we need to continue to work on our zone defense."
