SoCon Tabs Wrightenberry as League's Defensive Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Elon senior defensive back Chandler Wrightenberry garnered the first weekly Southern Conference honor of his career as he was named the league's defensive player of the week for games played Saturday, Oct. 5.  Wrightenberry becomes the third Phoenix player to claim a weekly league accolade this season.

In Elon's 28-25 victory at Furman, Wrightenberry tallied seven solo tackles and returned a first-quarter interception 33 yards for a touchdown that gave the Phoenix a 14-7 edge that it would never relinquish.  The interception was the sixth of his career and the first non-offensive touchdown for the maroon and gold since Joshua Jones returned and INT 40 yards at Furman on Nov. 12, 2011.

Wrightenberry is currently tied for fourth on the team with 30 total tackles and now has 186 career tackles.

Also earning an honor this week was freshman punter David Petroni.  Petroni was an honorable mention selection for College Football Performance Awards' Punter of the Week recognition.  He averaged 45.6 yards on five punts, including a career-long kick of 59 yards in the win at Furman.  Three of his five punts were placed inside the Paladins' 20-yard line.
