ELON, N.C. – Elon University men's tennis head coach
Michael Leonard announced his team's 2014 schedule today, Dec. 9, which is highlighted by an appearance in the prestigious ITA Division I Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 24-25 in Charlottesville, Va.
Last year's Southern Conference Regular Season champions, Elon returns every player from last season's starting lineup, including reigning SoCon Player of the Year,
Cameron Silverman. The Phoenix finished last season with a 17-8 mark and a No. 64 national ranking by the ITA.
"We're really excited about our schedule this season and beginning the year against several nationally-ranked opponents," stated Leonard. "It presents many challenges throughout the year for us and our non-conference slate should prepare us for a run at another Southern Conference title. We're thrilled to be a part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend for the first time in school history and compete against some of the nation's top teams."
Following the NC State Invitational (Jan. 10-12) and a non-conference match at Duke (Jan. 17), Elon treks to the campus of the University of Virginia for the ITA Division I Kick-Off Weekend to face the top-seeded Cavaliers on Jan. 24. A day later, Elon will face either second-seeded Indiana or third-seeded Samford.
Elon is the one of two SoCon schools, with Samford being the other, to earn an invitation to the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament. A total of 60 teams will compete at 15 different sites. The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Boar's Head Sports Club (hosted by the University of Virginia), Feb. 7-10, 2014.
Following the ITA Division I Kick-Off Weekend, Elon returns home to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center for four straight home matches against Norfolk State (Feb. 8), UNC Asheville (Feb. 8), Campbell (Feb. 12) and Greensboro College (Feb. 14).
After a pair of matches in Wilmington, N.C., against UNCW (Feb. 21) and East Tennessee State (Feb. 22), the Phoenix returns home for four straight matches. Elon takes on Brown on Feb. 28 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro, N.C., before matches against Chattanooga (March 1), Samford (March 8) and Davidson (March 9).
After a non-conference road match at Winthrop on March 14, the Phoenix plays host to Radford in a non-conference match on March 16 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Phoenix closes out the regular season with two home matches, as the team welcomes Appalachian State (April 9) and East Carolina (April 12) to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Elon will celebrate Senior Day on April 12 against ECU, as Silverman, the lone senior, plays his final home match for Elon.
The 2014 Southern Conference Men's Tennis Championship is slated for April 16-19 in Chattanooga, Tenn., on the campus of UTC. Elon earned the top seed in last year's tournament, falling to Samford in the finals.
