MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Elon University men’s tennis team saw its eight-match winning streak come to an end with a 4-2 setback against Georgia State on Saturday evening, March 30, in the Middle Tennessee State University Shootout semifinals. Elon, seeded second in the tournament and ranked 72nd in the nation, drops to 12-5 with the loss.
The Phoenix took an early 1-0 lead after 45th-ranked
Cameron Silverman claimed a 6-3, 6-4, decision at No. 1 singles against Victor Valente. Silverman improves his season record to 12-5.
But Georgia State came back, winning the next two matches at No. 3 and 4 to go ahead, 2-1.
Elon tied the match at 2-all at No. 5 singles, as
Juan Madrid registered a victory in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, against Georgia State’s Paul Schuette. Madrid improves to 8-5 with the victory.
Following a win by GSU at No. 6, the Phoenix dropped a heartbreaker at No. 2. Elon standout
Stefan Fortmann, who came into the match victorious in nine of his last ten competitions, fell in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, to Thomas Cook.
The Phoenix returns to action tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. against South Alabama.
