Kinsella Named Player of the Year, Multiple Elon Players Honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Elon junior first baseman Ryan Kinsella was selected as the 2013 Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Year in voting of the league's coaches.  Kinsella was also named a first-team all-league selection by both the coaches and media.  Senior righty Kyle Webb was a second-team pick by both groups, while junior outfielder Sebastian Gomez was a second-team selection by the coaches.

Kinsella's honor marks the fifth time an Elon player has earned SoCon Player of the Year (player, pitcher of freshman) accolades from the coaches.  The Warren, N.J., native hit .324 with 50 runs scored and seven stolen bases during the regular season.  His 19 home runs and 70 RBI led the SoCon and rank as the second-highest total in Division I baseball this season.  Kinsella also led the league with a .676 slugging percentage, is tied for third with 17 doubles and tied for sixth with 50 runs sored.  In SoCon games, Kinsella hit .283 with 30 runs scored, 10 home runs and 36 RBI.

Webb was the lone SoCon weekend regular starter to go undefeated in league play this year as he put up a 6-0 mark with a 2.93 ERA in conference play.  In 61.1 SoCon innings, the Jacksonville, Fla., resident struck out 65, issued just 13 walks and held opponents to a .256 batting average.  Overall, Webb was 6-2 (with the losses coming to nationally ranked North Carolina and Louisville in the same week) with a 3.28 ERA.  He struck out 81 in 85.0 innings while opponents are hitting .269 off of him.  He surrendered just 14 extra-base hits all season.  Webb will enter the SoCon Tournament not having allowed an extra-base hit in his last 26.1 innings.

Gomez led the maroon and gold with a .326 batting average during the regular season.  Normally an infielder, Gomez made the move to the outfield after injuries early in the season forced him to play center field.  He scored 31 runs, had 13 doubles, one triple, two homers and drove in 32 while stealing 10 bases.  In SoCon play, Gomez hit .364 with 23 runs scored, nine doubles, two home runs, 15 RBI and six steals.  The Miramar, Fla., native has also not struck out much in league play - just one strike out per 12.4 at bats in SoCon action.

The Phoenix finished the 2013 regular season tied for second in the Southern Conference standings, its ninth consecutive finish of third or better in the league.  Elon will be seeded third in the upcoming league tournament and will face sixth-seeded Furman at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22 at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C.
